Walk a few blocks in any direction in Seattle, and you\u2019re likely to find a coffee shop. But the rarer kind \u2014 those that roast their own beans \u2014 are worth seeking out, especially if they carry Seattle\u2019s best pastries. Diva Espresso<\/a>, founded in 1992 and roasting small batches since 2001, now has seven caf\u00e9s throughout the Seattle area.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cEach location has its own identity and customer base,\u201d says owner Greg Hamper. He and his daughter, Jessica Moses, manage the entire operation, including a crew of nearly 50 employees. They deliver freshly roasted coffee to each caf\u00e9 every few days, so each cup bursts with lively flavors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diva Espresso began with a single caf\u00e9 in Seattle\u2019s Greenwood neighborhood in 1992. Through careful expansion, the company has grown to two downtown locations and five neighborhood caf\u00e9s. Throughout, it has stayed true to its roots: provide great coffee and a warm welcome \u2014 without pretense. The father-daughter partnership has flourished. Greg handles leases, banking, and other behind-the-scenes work, while Jessica oversees day-to-day operations and manages the staff.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\"Diva<\/a><\/figure>\n\n\n\n

Roasting is done entirely by hand \u2014 no automated machines \u2014 by a roaster who has been with the company for two decades. \u201cThe coffee that you\u2019re getting in our stores is less than a week old. It\u2019s very, very fresh,\u201d Jessica says. \u201cIt\u2019s one of the things that sets us apart from the competition.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Their signature Highlands blend is used in all espresso drinks. That never changes. But each caf\u00e9 picks what drip coffee to serve. Offerings rotate often, showcasing blends and single-origin beans \u2014 Ethiopian, Mexican, Costa Rican, and more \u2014 giving customers a chance to discover something new with each visit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cWe ship it all over the world,\u201d says Greg. \u201cI guess when people move, they still want their favorite coffee. They\u2019ll buy it in one pound or even five-pound bags. Some people are pretty amazing how much they buy.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

None of Diva\u2019s seven locations sits more than twenty minutes from the roaster and warehouse at the Broadview caf\u00e9, where a glassed-in area lets customers watch the roasting process unfold. \u201cThe key for us,\u201d Greg says, \u201cis for each caf\u00e9 to be close enough that we can keep our fingers on quality.\u201d The original Greenwood caf\u00e9 is a cozy, 800-square-foot nook that has become a neighborhood icon. Downtown, the Harborview and Chinook spots cater to doctors, nurses, office workers, and visitors \u2014 often with lines that run all day, but with friendly baristas who know most customers by name, and by drink.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diva recently moved its Stone Way store, near Green Lake, across the street to a bigger building. They\u2019ll miss the funky converted gas station that was home for many years, but the new location doubles the available space in a more comfortable environment \u2014 complete with the same friendly faces and robust coffee that regulars know and love.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The average tenure of Diva\u2019s managers is around 15 years, a rarity in the coffee business. One manager has been with them almost since the beginning. \u201cIt\u2019s a good community,\u201d says Jessica. \u201cThey support each other and share the same vision.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diva is a longtime Macrina customer, carrying both sweet and savory baked goods. \u201cOver the years, we\u2019ve struggled with a few vendors,\u201d says Greg. \u201cMacrina is consistent, on-time, and communicative.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMacrina brought some consistency that we desperately needed for seven locations,\u201d says Jessica. \u201cWhat you order is what you\u2019re going to get. And you\u2019re going to get it when you\u2019re supposed to get it. And if something goes awry, they\u2019re very, very quick to fix it and address it and move on.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
