In honor of our 25th anniversary, we are spotlighting a few key employees. Each fills an essential role at Macrina.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Ariel Singh\u2019s experience and talent make her the perfect person to open our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrinabakery.com\/aloha-cafe.php\">new caf\u00e9 on Capitol Hill at 746 19th Ave E (on the corner of Aloha and 19th)<\/a>. She\u2019s as wonderful a person as she is talented with customers and crew alike. Managing a caf\u00e9 is a big job requiring superb customer service skills, extensive food knowledge, people management, logistics, administrative duties, and more. Ariel does it all with grace, charm and efficiency.<\/i><\/p>\n<p><i>Leslie<\/i><\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3284\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9186-1024x682.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"389\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9186-1024x682.jpeg 1024w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9186-300x200.jpeg 300w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9186-768x512.jpeg 768w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9186-450x300.jpeg 450w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/IMG_9186.jpeg 1280w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/p>\n<h1>Life at Macrina<\/h1>\n<p>Ariel started working at Macrina\u2019s <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrinabakery.com\/belltown-cafe.php\">Belltown Caf\u00e9<\/a> in 2012, in the midst of a remodel. She spent much of her first week working side by side with <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrinabakery.com\/leslie-mackie.php\">Leslie Mackie<\/a>, cleaning and scrubbing, before moving into other roles in the caf\u00e9s.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMacrina has grown, but Leslie is still present in everything we do,\u201d Ariel said. \u201cThe <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrinabakery.com\/bread-menu.php\">breads<\/a>, the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrinabakery.com\/pastry-menu.php\">pastries<\/a>, and the values are the same. In some ways, I\u2019d say Macrina has just continued to grow into itself.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>After Belltown, Ariel moved to the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrinabakery.com\/mcgraw-cafe.php\">McGraw Caf\u00e9<\/a> where she worked as Assistant Manager. She was promoted to General Manager of our <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrinabakery.com\/sodo-cafe.php\">Sodo Caf\u00e9<\/a> in 2016. This was when Macrina&#8217;s wholesale production still worked in the space behind the caf\u00e9. About a year later, having outgrown that space, wholesale moved to our bakery in Kent, though you can still watch the pastry team working behind the windows at the Sodo caf\u00e9.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBefore wholesale moved, it was so fun to walk back there and see and experience everything being made from scratch, the potatoes boiling for the potato bread, all the dough being kneaded, and teams of bakers hand-forming and scoring every loaf. I miss it and encourage my crew to get out to <a href=\"http:\/\/www.macrinabakery.com\/kent-cafe.php\">Kent<\/a> to see all the work that goes into our products.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>There has been one advantage since Wholesale moved out of Sodo. \u201cWithout the huge rack ovens running 24 hours a day, the caf\u00e9 stays cooler.\u201d Plus, speaking of cool, <a href=\"http:\/\/www.gelatiamo.com\/\">Gelatiamo<\/a>, Seattle\u2019s extraordinary gelato maker, now occupies part of the space. Owner Maria Coassin quickly hit it off with Ariel, so much so that she has been helping Ariel plan her upcoming honeymoon!<\/p>\n<h2>Opening a New Caf\u00e9<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-large wp-image-3285\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/image1-819x1024.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"584\" height=\"730\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/image1-819x1024.jpg 819w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/image1-240x300.jpg 240w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/image1-768x960.jpg 768w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/image1-300x375.jpg 300w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/05\/image1.jpg 1512w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 584px) 100vw, 584px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>Ariel worked down in Sodo until this past August. When offered the opportunity to open Macrina\u2019s newest caf\u00e9, there was no hesitation.\u00a0 \u201cI\u2019m really looking forward to the challenge,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n<p>The location of the caf\u00e9 was once home to the Surrogate Hostess. People are still talking about the Surrogate Hostess today, which is a testimony of the impact the bakery made on the tight-knit community. This would be a tough act for anyone to follow, but Ariel is a perfect fit. She is good with her crew, but she truly makes a point to create connections with her customers. \u201cI\u2019ve loved each of the caf\u00e9s for different reasons,\u201d Ariel says. \u201cEach has a nostalgic feeling for me that I relate to different parts of my life. The best compliment I can get is when a customer from another caf\u00e9 comes in and remembers me and say they miss me.\u201d Now she&#8217;s ready to make new memories at Aloha and excited to get to know new customers in a new neighborhood.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAriel is incredibly hard working,\u201d says <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/meet-our-family-crystal-kitchin\/\">Crystal Kitchin<\/a>, the General Manager overseeing all of the caf\u00e9s. \u201cShe strives for perfection. Working in food service, you can only control so much yourself. The rest comes from training your crew well. Ariel has risen to the occasion and become a great leader.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>But Ariel is just as appreciative of Crystal. \u201cI\u2019m lucky to work for a boss who I really like,\u201d Ariel says. \u201cCrystal is a guiding light. If I\u2019m having a tough time dealing with something, she has an answer. Even to the most complicated interpersonal issues that come up with a big staff. I\u2019ve also learned so much from working with Leslie. She\u2019s the epitome of Macrina and what it embodies, in all the best ways.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h1>The Married Life<\/h1>\n<p>Ariel was married to her husband Narayan Singh about a year ago, almost to the day, on Labor Day 2017. The Corson Building, a gem tucked under the freeway in Seattle\u2019s Georgetown neighborhood, provided the perfect setting for a food-crazy couple. If a flaw could be found, it was only that the day was a little warm for Ariel, about 85 degrees. \u201cI was a little hot in my dress,\u201d Ariel says, \u201cbut Narayan was happy. The wedding was perfect.\u201d<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>They met in Seattle after both moving from warmer places, Ariel from L.A., Narayan from Las Vegas. Taylor Murphy, a mutual friend, introduced them. She used to work with Ariel. Because of their friendship, and Taylor being the point of intersection, Ariel and Narayan asked her to officiate their wedding. \u201cAt work, Taylor was frequently a little late, and I\u2019m a stickler for punctuality. But she was definitely on time for the wedding,\u201d Ariel laughs.<\/p>\n<p>Narayan is a Clinical Psychology Doctoral Student at Seattle Pacific University. This keeps him very busy, which was part of the reason why they delayed their honeymoon until this summer.<span class=\"Apple-converted-space\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Since I opened Macrina in 1993, so many amazing people have helped make the bakery what it is today.
