This was in 1994 \u2013 just after Macrina first opened.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignleft size-medium wp-image-198\" title=\"Phuong\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Phuong-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"Phuong\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Phuong-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Phuong-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Phuong.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>While he worked as a dishwasher, Phuong would always make himself available to help with food prep, to help shape bread, and to watch the bakers load the ovens \u2013 constantly seeking opportunities to learn more so that he could grow professionally while supporting Macrina\u2019s growth.<\/p>\n<p>18 years later Phuong manages our entire wholesale production team \u2013 fifty employees in all, diverse in age, ethnicity and experience \u2013 and Phuong takes great care to help them all develop the skills to succeed in their work, and for many of them, to adapt to a new life in Seattle.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Phuong_bakers.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-199 alignleft\" title=\"Phuong_bakers\" src=\"https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Phuong_bakers-200x300.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"200\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Phuong_bakers-200x300.jpg 200w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Phuong_bakers-682x1024.jpg 682w, https:\/\/blog.macrinabakery.com\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2012\/10\/Phuong_bakers.jpg 1200w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 200px) 100vw, 200px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Before starting at Macrina, Phuong had been trying to get to America from his native Vietnam for some time.\u00a0 His first attempt was as a boat refugee when he was captured and imprisoned for two years.\u00a0 When he was released Phuong received help and support from friends and family, which led to his arrival and new life in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>Today, everything Phuong does through his work at Macrina demonstrates his gratitude for the help and support he has received.
